Yes, Orlando is a theme park city. But it's also a city with 155 hotels, lakeside resorts, and a growing food scene that has nothing to do with character dining. International Drive is the hotel corridor, with rooms from $41/night and easy access to Universal, SeaWorld, and the Orange County Convention Center.
The Walt Disney World area keeps drive time to the gates under ten minutes. Universal's on-site hotels offer Express Pass perks that can save hours of queue time. But Downtown Orlando is where locals actually eat, drink, and go out. Mills 50 has the Vietnamese food, Winter Park has the brunch spots, and the bar scene along Wall Street Plaza runs late.
Orlando works for more than families. Convention travelers fill the city year-round, golfers have dozens of courses within a half-hour drive, and the Everglades are a day trip away. Book near the parks if the rides are the priority, or stay downtown for a different side of Central Florida.
$41/night on International Drive. Resort properties closer to the parks run $128-409/night. The further you stay from the castle, the less you pay.
International Drive has the most hotels and sits between all the major parks. The Walt Disney World area keeps travel time to the gates under 10 minutes. Downtown Orlando is where the locals actually go out at night.
Late January through mid-February, and September through early November. School is in session, the parks are less crowded, and hotel rates drop noticeably between the holiday and summer-break rushes.
Plenty. Conrad Orlando, the Four Seasons at Walt Disney World, and several upscale properties sit within minutes of the gates. Near-park resorts start around $55/night and go up from there.
No. The convention center draws business travelers year-round. Downtown Orlando has a growing restaurant and bar scene. Golf courses surround the city. The parks themselves have adult-focused attractions, and Universal's newer areas target an older audience.
About an hour. Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna Beach on the Atlantic coast are the closest options, roughly 50-60 miles east. Clearwater Beach on the Gulf side takes about 90 minutes. Many visitors add a beach day or two to their park itinerary.
